Eleanor of Aquitaine was the Queen consort of France from August 1, 1137 to March 21, 1152. She was the Queen consort of England from October 25, 1154 to July 6, 1189.
As a girl, she lived on her father's land of Poirot. Around the age of thirteen or fifteen, she married Louis VII, the heir of the king of France, and just a month later he was crowned and she became queen; she lived in the palace with her husband. After fifteen years, the Church annulled the marriage. For the next eight weeks Eleanor lived at her home in Aquitaine again, before marrying Henry II, heir of the throne of England. She lived with him, presumably in the palace. Two years after the wedding, they became king and queen of England. It appears that during her queenship Eleanor, being active in her husband's duties, traveled between the palace and her lands or Aquitaine and Poirot. Due to rebellions against her husband that she and her sons attempted, Henry II eventually imprisoned her in various castles of his. After his death, she was a free woman again and lived on her own lands, as she had as a child.
Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most formidable and impressive women in Europe during the Middle Ages (lived 1122 - 1204). She was the Duchess of Aquitaine (in modern-day south-western France) from the age of 15, and this duchy (unlike some) was large, powerful and wealthy. . Eleanor was famously beautiful. Her wealth, status and beauty made her extremely eligible for marriage, and she married Louis VII, King of France, and later Henry II, King of England. She had 10 children by these two monarchs, most of whom went on to assume various noble or royal titles. Of these, the most famous is probably her sixth child and third son Richard I, King of England, who is better known as Richard the Lionheart. She had a hard and challenging life, with extremes from Regent of England to being imprisoned. She travelled extensively (for the time). Despite this, she would outlive all of her children save two, King John of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile (in modern-day Spain)
