Specifically, the riots began on April 28, 1789 near the factory of luxury wallpaper manufacturer Jean-Baptiste Réveillon (1725 - 1811) in Paris' St. Antoine district. Rumors had spread that Réveillon was going to lower wages of his skilled workers in order to help lower bread prices. The next day Réveillon, who was known for concern for the poor and for his workers, saw both his factory and home burned down.
