The reason for wearing helmets dates back to Medieval times, when it was thought that wearing some sort of armour would protect people from swords, arrows and other war instruments. By the time the C20th had arrived, helmets had slimmed down considerably, compared to their Medieval ancestors. And, of course, they did very little to protect the wearer.
