There's a few things that'll do damage to audio cassettes. The first thing that comes to mind is heat, especially if you leave them in the car on a hot summer's day. The next is age. Even though they're usually made out of mylar with a a metal oxide of some type compressed into the surface, they will start to lose their magnetic properties obver time, causing a degradation of the audio quality recorded on the tape.

Wear also plays an important factor. The more you play a tape, the more surface wear you'll get on the recording medium and of course, it the tape player's heads aren't demagnetized about every 50 hour's use, that too will start to degrade the quality of the recorded sound.

If you have a cassette you want to save, best thing is to store it in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and high humidity, outside magnetic sources and `open air` contamination.
