It spread faster in the warmer months of Spring, Summer, and early Fall because rats and the plague-spreading fleas they carried were more active then.

Bubonic Plague - was spread by the fleas who lived on plague-infected rats, and such rats were ubiquitous on trading ships. But the people of that time believed that the plague was a punishment from god too punish the wicked and the good people would be saved by god.Pneumonic Plague - could spread with a sneeze and jump from person to person with terrifying speed.Septicemic Plague - spread through contact with open sores
Bubonic plague was prevented, not cured. Having cleaner cities, cleaner and better medical practices, and staying away from rats greatly decreased bubonic plague. It was a long time ago, so I don't think we have to worrry.
A long time
Australia has had the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague first hit Australia in January 1900 and continued through to July, when a major cleansing operation was conducted in Sydney. However, ships coming from overseas continued to cause more outbreaks of the plague in Australia right through to 1925. During this time, there were 1371 cases of plague reported, and 535 deaths.
The Bubonic plague effected society because there was no sewer lining and lots of people were dying and there wasn't much help that could be given.
Isolated cases of Bubonic and Pneumonic Plague will reemerge from time to time, but it is easily treated with antibiotics.
