If you have a miscarriage and the remains doesn´t come out or if you have an abortion they can perform a D&C which is basically scraping out the uterus. D stands for dilation which means they dilate the cervix to the size of a straw and C is for curettage which is the tool they use for scraping.

commonly used to obtain tissue for microscopic evaluation to rule out cancer. D and C may also be used to diagnose and treat heavy menstrual bleeding, and to diagnose endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids.

They give you medication to soften the cervix and then they sedate you. They will slowly dilate the cervix and then use the curette to scrape the uterus wall and therefor ending the pregnancy. Then they suck the content out.

D& C is performed when a woman continually bleeds -- such as longer than 6 weeks after the birth of a child. Excessive bleeding can lead to anemia; after childbirth, sometimes some tissue is "retained" and this could also cause an infection if left in the uterus.

A D&C is NOT an abortion, though the procedure uses some of the same methods. Most D&Cs occur about 6 weeks AFTER childbirth, or for other reasons, like after an incomplete abortion or miscarriage.

Make sure to follow any instructions you are given, and return for your follow-up exam / appointment.
