Britain controlled part of the south including Phuket, a small part of the north near Burma, France did likewise near Laos, Cambodian border. The country was never fully occupied as it was used as a buffer zone between opposing French and British armies, and the British were paid large sums of gold so as not to invade and control as a colonial power.
