Shostakovich grew up in a musical family in which both his parents and his older sister made music at home. He began to take piano lessons in 1915 (age 9) and quickly blossomed as a superb pianist. He began composing (informally) within a few months. A few small pieces from the next year or so survive in friends' albums, but he destroyed most of them.
He entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1919 (age 13) and started formal study of music. The same year he composed his official Opus 1, a Scherzo for orchestra. There is at least one recording of pieces that Shostakovich composed in his early teens, and it reveals that he already had a substantial control of musical ideas and structure.

Today we don't have classical music composers. Classical music is period around XVI to XIX century, even part of XX century. It was pushed by, in one side, atonality (modern music) and popular music in the other. Now, it's possible that today's composers write in a classical way. For example, the Prokofiev's First Symphony 'Classical' or Stravinsky's Pulcinella suite. But, even, we can't talk of classical music nowdays.
