When did Jesus die and where?

The 'where' is relatively agreed upon as just outside of Jerusalem - a place called 'Golgotha' or "the place of the skull" in Aramaic. It is the when that is under great debate with ranges as broad as 26-37 AD. Here is a recap of what several biblical scholars believe based upon Scripture:


First, the 70 weeks prophecy of Daniel 9:25, is interpreted as two segments of weeks - 69 and the 1 last week. Each week follows the 'year for a day' principle seen in Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:4-6. So 69 weeks times 7 days in a week is 483 days and in this prophecy, interpreted as 483 years. The final 1 week will occur in the last 3 1/2 years of tribulation and the Day of the Lord.


Now concerning Ezra 7:8-11, noting that the Jewish calendar goes from Fall to Fall. Anaxerxes begins his 'ascension' year after his father, Xerxes dies in December 465 BC. The Persian year was from Spring to Spring so Anaxerxes would ascend to the thrown in the Spring of 464-463 BC. In the 7th year of his reign, he issues the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. This is 458-457 BC.




Ezra accepts the decree of Anaxerxes in the Fall of 457 and begins his journey to Jerusalem on or about Nisan 1 or the beginning of Spring March-April of that year. He completes the journey on or about Ab 1 or August after 5 months of travel. This is at the end of 457 BC just before the Jewish New Year in September for 456 BC.




Now these scholars believe the base year for the prophecy of the Messiah's ministry is set to the start of Ezra's accepting the decree in the Fall of 457 BC. Adding the 483 days of a week for a year prophecy we get 457 - 483 = 25-26 AD. Our calendar omits year zero in error (Denis the Little calculations) so we must add 1 year giving us 26-27 AD as the start of Jesus' ministry - most use 27 AD as the Fall of 457 comes to the Fall of 27 AD.




Lastly, Jesus' ministry lasted 3 1/2 years. This would place His crucifixion in the Spring of 31 AD. Many have dated this event to 25 April 31 AD, the Wednesday (middle of the week of final 1 week to get to 70 weeks) Passover of that year. He was 36 1/2 years old. Satan's future tribulation (2 1/2 years) and the 1 year of the Day of the Lord (totaling 3 1/2 years) will complete the 40 year cycle (70 weeks) with 40 being reflected in numerology as a 'time or period of testing/trial.'
