Lorenzo de Medici was the patron of a school for talented sculptors located in the garden of his palazzo. When he met the young Michelangelo, he immediately saw talent in him ( in the occasion, Michelangelo showed Lorenzo a sculpture of a fawn, which is credited for being Michelangelo's first sculpture and is now lost). Upon realizing Michelangelo's talent, Lorenzo invited him to join the sculptors' school and also invited him to come live in his palazzo with his family. Who were the medicis?

The Medici were a powerful family that ruled Florence for over 100 years. They supported some of the greatest artists of the renaissance, such as Donatello and Michelangelo. The Medici started out as a merchant family, but eventually their business, influences and friends made them the richest family in Florence and they eventually took power. Cosimo De Medici was the first Medici who ruled Florence, he was the patron of Filippo Brunelleschi, the person who desgined and led the construction of the big Cathedral of Florence Lorenzo de Medici created an art academy where famous artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo made their art. The Pope Leo X was a Medici that was exiled from Florence. Even Galileo belonged to the Medici court, he was the personal teacher of one of the Medici.

How did Giorgio Vasari save Michelangelo's David?

Michelangelo was raised in the de' Medici household, virtually adopted by Lorenzo de' Medici (aka Lorenzo the Magnificant), and raised alongside his own sons, Giovanni and Guilio. Both Giovanni and Guilio entered the church (as a cardinal and a priest, respectively). Both would later become Popes (Leo X and Clement VII). The de' Medici family had a love-hate relationship with Florence, sometimes banished, sometimes hunted and sometimes worshiped. Michelangelo's David was in fact made by Michelangelo to depict Florence as David to the Goliath of the de' Medici family. The hand was shattered into seven pieces when a bench was thrown out a window during a riot in 1527 which resulted in the de' Medicis once again being expelled from the city. This is generally considered somewhat ironic, as the statue, originally crafted as a protest against the de' Medici's, was damaged in another protest against the de' Medici family. None other than Vasari came to David's rescue, gathering the scattered pieces and placing them in safe keeping for later repair. Vasari had studied with Michelangelo, and he kept the pieces hidden until the de' Medicis were safely returned to power in Florence. He struck up an alliance with the new Duke, Cosimo de' Medici. Michelangelo, for his part, refused to accept Cosimo's control over Florence. He remained in Rome until his death in 1564. The Florentine government stole his body and removed it from Rome. They held a huge service in his honour, in spite of thirty years of enmity with Florence and the de' Medici family. Vasari went on to write the world's first work of art history, which glorified the de' Medici family's role in the rebirth of Art. It was dedicated to Cosimo, and was the first to use the term Renaissance to refer to this period.

When did Michelangelo work for the Medici family?

Michelangelo Buonarroti, who became known by his first name alone, was probably the greatest artist of the European Renaissance. The Medici were the greatest and richest family of his native Florence and patrons of self-indulgent art. Their histories are intertwined, but there was tremendous tension between them until Michelangelo left his home and the Medici for the last three decades of his life. Michelango was invited at age 14 by Lorenzo de Medici to attend his private art school.Three years later, Lorenzo died and Michelangelo lost the financial backing and social favor of the Medici family. Two years later he was invited back to court on a commission from Pierro de Medici. But that same year the Medicis were ousted as rulers of Florence under French pressure. Michelangelo fled, but returned within a year after Florence stabilized. But the only commissions offered him came from the Medici family. One work was sold to a Vatican official, who was so impressed he invited Michelangelo, now 21, to Rome. He moved between Rome and Florence until newly elected Pope Julius II gave Michelangelo his first papal commission in 1505. That led to a job in 1508 to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which he completed in 1512. But Julius died in 1513, and was succeeded by Leo X of the Medici family. The two clashed as Michelangelo was commissioned to build a new facade for the basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, then was frustrated at every turn of the still-unfinished project before the cash-strapped family cancelled it after three years. Amazingly, the family soon thereafter rehired Michelangelo to build a family funerary chapel in San Lorenzo. This was completed, but only by Michelangelo's assistants after his final break with the family. A public uprising in 1527 ousted the ducal Medicis, and a republic was reinstalled. When the Medici returned to besiege the city, Michelangelo stopped work on their chapel and began work strengthening the city's defenses against them. But the city fell and the Medici were reinstated in 1530. Michelangelo was completely out of favor with and for the Medici, and left Florence for good until his body was exhumed in Rome and he was re-interred -- according to his wishes -- in his native city.
