Don't think he did - depending on your definition of "invent".
Saddles, cruder, but still recognizable as saddles, have been around so long that there's no record of who was really first with the idea of adding some complicated padding between himself and the horse.
Plenty of people have helped refine the design over the years, most of which will remain unnamed.
William D Davis did not invent the saddle. The saddle had been around long before he was ever born. The misconception that he invented the actual saddle came about because he did invent a new type of saddle. His version of the standard issue cavalry saddle had extra springs in the seat and stirrup beds to aid in long journeys on hard trotting horses. However the saddle never really took off and even though it was patented it is not produced anymore.
The Assyrians are the first people credited for creating the 'saddle' in around 700 BC. However saddles in some form or another have been around since at least 4000 BC.

The main difference is the saddle. English saddle is generally a lot lighter and has no horn. Western saddle is heavier and does have a horn. You can also walk, trot, canter, and gallop on both. Another main difference is the way you sit on it. English you have to use pressure everywhere, so it's not as comfortable for the horse. Western saddles are much more deep and much more comfortable. And Western riding is a LOT faster...TRUST ME. :D Hope this helps!
