There is some debate about this: some sources say 1939 because unemployment was finally decreasing and the country seemed well on the way to recovery. But one in five Americans was still out of work. For that reason, many historians believe the Depression really ended in late 1941 or early 1942, as a result of the United States entering World War II. The war-time economy provided jobs for millions of men and women, in the military, in manufacturing, in communications and civil defense, etc.
