The GM plant closed in August 1987. It was reopened years later as warehouse storage space, and is still operating as such. As a matter of fact, I've worked at the plant for ten years and holding now.

As of 2012, the only active General Motors facility in 'Kansas City' is the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The current facility replaced the older Fairfax building which was originally a bomber assembly plant during WWII. GM took possession of the original facility in 1947. The new Fairfax Assembly facility was opened in 1987 on the adjacent land occupied by the runway. The Leeds Assembly plant in Kansas City, Mo. ceased production in April 1988 after almost 60 years of service. It is near the Truman Sports Complex and can be seen from Interstate 435. GM maintained a Delco Battery facility in Olathe, Kansas (Suburb of Kansas City) It ceased to be a GM operation in the late 1980's-early 1990's.

Leeds was a B-O-P assembly plant for most of it's life as a GM plant. Leeds made A and G bodies until 1980 (downsized models). The J car was produced from 1981 until it's closure in August 1988. It's sister plants were Southgate, CA and Janesville, WI. Southgate closed after only one year of production while Janesville continued making cars/SUVs until it closed last year when it lost it's bid to continue producing SUVs to Arlington Assembly.
