The passage in The Bible that many people have been taught to call the "Lord's Prayer" [Matt.6:9-13]... is NOT a prayer at all; nor does the Bible call it "The Lord's Prayer."

It's a "prayer outline": elements that one should include when praying to the Father in heaven. As Jesus tells us:

"When you pray, don't babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again. Don't be like them, because your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!" (Matt.6:7-8 NLT New Living Translation)

Then, Jesus tells us [and He is NOT PRAYING, here] -- He says:

"PRAY LIKE THIS: Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored..." (verse 9).

So, what do deceived men do when they gather into religious groups? They "repeat" this prayer outline again and again, just as Jesus teaches us NOT to do.

The "prayer outline" in Matthew 6 is a "teaching tool" to learn how to pray... and to learn some of the things that should be important elements in our daily lives.

People still haven't learned how "sacred" the Father's name is [point one of Jesus' outline - see also the Third Commandment, regarding God's NAME].

People still don't seem to know that God is bringing the Kingdom of God to earth, where His will, laws and rule will eventually BE DONE. The Kingdom of God is the "gospel" [good news] message of Jesus Christ [see Mark 1:14-15]

People obsess over the sating of their stomachs [over bread which feeds the body]... and neglect the Bread of Life, the Word of God, the character-builder that feeds and nourishes the spirit within us.

And people around the world UTTERLY REFUSE TO FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER -- the single most important problem and lesson that mankind needs to learn in order to be born into God's future Immortal Family... because the first two people God created chose the "wrong god" [the god of this world] to worship and obey.

Jesus concludes His prayer outline by referring to that last important lesson for His creation, man, created in God's image:

"If you forgive those who sin against you [as Jesus would later do when he is murdered by His creation], your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins." (verses 14-15)

So, while the "Lord's Prayer," as men call it, is a terrific "prayer outline study"... God provides His creation with an abundant selection of Holy Spirit-inspired prayers in the book of "Psalms." And men would be better disposed to offer any or all of these heart-felt pleas, cries and/or shouts of praise to the Father in heaven, to say.

I've always been partial to Psalm 51: "Have Mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing Love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins...".

Our prayers mean so much more when we can "identify" with them... and not just "say" them.

What is the meaning of the address of the lords prayer our father which art in heaven?

It is simply the way we Christians refer to God when we pray, I usually say Dear Heavenly father and so on. The Lords prayer was Jesus teaching us how to pray, we say God is the father, Jesus the son and then there's the holy spirit. So God is our father in Heaven
