i can tell you from experience that the gap is dependent upon the style you are looking for , if you want a tight cultured look try to lay the stone with 1/2" to 3/4" gap if you are looking for rustic then vary the gaps based on the stones size but try to never have more than a 1 1/2" gap. i hope this helps
