It's to reduce the risk of infection for both the nurse and the client. Typically if there's any contact with bodily fluids it's safer to wear gloves in case a patient has any disease or infection. And most nurses take it one step further, washing their hands before and after donning gloves for added protection and safety, since nothing is ever guaranteed.

Usually non-sterile surgical gloves are worn as precaution by anyone in contact with the patient or their items, to protect the patient, other patients, and the staff from spread of infectious diseases (whether as yet diagnosed or not).

Any procedures that are sterile procedures require sterile surgical gloves, such as those procedures done in an operative suite in the surgery department, or at the bedside for sterile procedures (catheterization, sterile dressing changes, etc.)

Nurses are regularly exposed to many different types of germs which require gloves to protect themselves, as well as their patients. Surgical gloves are thin enough to allow them to easliy and safely handle instruments and strong enough to provide a safe and sanitary barrier.

Wearing gloves and sanitation, like washing hands, is very important in health care. The number one way that diseases are spread is by touching a surface that has pathogens, and in a health care setting, there are lots of people in close contact, and some of them are sick. It's important to take responsibility for your own health as well as that of others, wearing gloves is a good practice for all those involved in health care.
