This is a complex question. Traditional Indian Snakes and Ladders boards come in three main sectarian types: Jain, Hindu, and Muslim (Sufi), each with differing board lay-outs and square-names. In each case the aim of the game is to get from ignorance to enlightenment, from karmic bondage to liberation, from hell states to heaven. Surviving boards of these kinds date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. For more information and identification of some of the square-names for each respective board type, see the article 'The Indian Game of Snakes and Ladders' by Andrew Topsfield in the journal Artibus Asiae (1985), and his follow-up article in the same journal in 2006; also the article 'Instant Karma' in the recent book edited by the same author, 'The Art of Play: Board and card games of India' (Bombay: Marg Publications 2006).
Hartmann Schopper has written: 'De omnibus illiberalibus siue mechanicis artibus, humani ingenii sagacitate atque industria iam inde ab exordio nascentis mundi vsque ad nostram aetatem adinuentis, luculentus atque succinctus liber' -- subject(s): Occupations, Occupations in art, Poetry
