Joan of Arc was captured on May 23, 1430 outside the gates of Compiegne, France . Joan at the time was leading a small group of French soldiers against Burgundian troops who wished to lay siege to Compiegne. She got too far from Compiegne when she realized her troops were badly out-numbered and began a retreat to Compiegne. Taking up a rear position to protect her retreating soldiers, the drawbridge to Compiegne was closed before Joan could get back in the town and avoid capture. She was surrounded by Burgundian soldiers, pulled off her horse, and later sold by John Duke of Luxembourg to the English.
Wars were a vastly different business in the Dark Ages. it so happened there were frequent skirmishes, raids on encampments- troops changing sides- as Free lance suggests, and so on. it is known the Girl Knight was first of all captured by the Burgundians. The Burgundians themselves had some Lady Knights- in colorful Burgundy colored armor and/or skirts. They were a sort of schismatic French state, not allied with France as a nation, hence they captured Joan, and eventually turned her over to the English, who proceeded with her execution. Isabel de Montfort was a sort of Girl sniper for the Burgundians, I do not know if she has targeted Joan.
Joan traveled to Compiègne in May of 1430 to help defend the city against an English and Burgundian siege. A skirmish on May 23, 1430, led to her capture, when her force attempted to attack the Burgundian's camp at Margny. When she ordered a retreat into the nearby fortifications of Compiègne after the advance of an additional force of 6,000 Burgundians, she assumed the place of honor as the last to leave the field. Burgundians surrounded the rear guard, and she was unhorsed by an archer and captured.
Joan was 17 when she began fighting, 18 when she was captured and 19 when she was executed.
