After the Taoiseach, the second highest office in an Irish government is called the Tánaiste. Since the 9th of March 2011, Eamon Gilmore has been Tánaiste.
The Tánaiste is the official title for a deputy head of government in Ireland, second only to the Taoiseach, which is the official title for the head of an Irish government. The Tánaiste can take over when the Taoiseach is not available. The Tánaiste can do things like sack ministers, answer questions on behalf of the Taoiseach, help in policy and decision making, help select ministers and various other tasks. A Tánaiste would always have their own ministry too, so they would be taking the role of minister of whatever department they are in charge of.
