May son was born with red hair. One hour later it was much darker. He has had very dark almost black hair since. He is in his 20's. My husband has 11 other siblings and he is the only red head. Some neices and nephews are strawberry blonde but no reds yet and I've been with the family 27 years. Oh yeah, No red heads in my family, only blonds and bru ettes.
A male dog is called a "dog." No kidding. A female is called a "bitch," (when you are using technical terms about dogs this is not considered a bad word) but there is no distinctive name for a male dog. In linguistics this is called "marking." This means that one word is the term for the whole group as well as the normal, expected thing, and whatever is out of the ordinary has a special term. You can see this when we talk about people as "a woman astronaut" or "a male nurse." A male astronaut or a female nurse are more usual and expected. You can see it in animal names when people write about a female lion as a lioness or a female tiger as a tigress. Cows in a field might include a bull. Some animal, like bears, have no special terms--you can refer to them as a boar and a sow, but if you use the word bear, it applies to both males and females. Oddly enough, pig, chicken, and bunny are the words for babies. You can also see it in school sports teams--the male teams have the "real" word (Colts, Bulldogs, Vikings, or whatever) and the female teams are the "Lady Colts", the "Lady Bulldogs," or even with the suffix "ettes", as in Bulldogettes. The suffix "-ettes," of course, means something small.
