The book by Pamela L Travers (not related to the Mary of Peter, Paul, and Mary, by the way) was written in l934. Events take place prior to World War I, in the movie one of the songs states l9l0. The movie was released in l964- the Broadway show- which is probably different in many ways- has only been out more recently. Mary and Bert are sort of Jane Addams types with a miore middle-class focus and have super-powers. There is more than a little occultism.

The novels were first published in 1934 according the the author who was interviewed by writers of a book that claimed the novels (not the film) had racist overtones. It should be noted the (Bert) character does not appear in the novels. the movie was made in 1964 or 1965 (release dates vary) it was the last film personally supervised by Walt Disney- who died in 1966. The Broadway play is much more recent- post 2000.
