One current theory is that bows were first used in Germany, but there is no real proof of this. The fact is that bows and arrows were "invented" by many cultures which were isolated from one another by oceans and entire continents. For example: The bow was in use in China around the same time the Ancient Egyptians were beginning to adopt its use. Also, the Native Americans (North Central and South America) were using the bow at least 300 years before Leif Eriksson made his voyage to "Vinland".
The main reason it is thought bows were "invented" in Germany is because the oldest surviving bow was found in a bog in that country. However, because bows are easiest to make when made of wood (and when dealing with the most primitive technology, the easiest materials to work with are the first to be used), and wood decomposes rapidly in wet, warm conditions, it is likely impossible to know exactly where the first bows were used, nor by which culture.
