Gangrene originated with man. It has always been a health issue and always will be. It has been studied by many, and the cures have gone from maggots and amputation to hyperbaric chambers and antibiotics.

My mother has gangrene in her left foot. She is ninety one years old very frail, has suffered a loss of apperite for a long time, so has lost a lot of weight. She is in a care home, and has been kept in bed since she came out of hospital, after suffering two epileptic fits, she was in hospital about three weeks. When they brought her back to the home, she was in bed for several weeks, she seemed to be getting better, so i nasked the doctor if she could get up and go and sit in the lounge,with the other residents, he said that would be fine. The home were very relutant to get her up, most days when i went up the home she was still in bed. In the end they got there way as she seemed to deteriate

Gangrene derives from the Latin word gangraena and from the Greek gangraina which means "putrefaction of tissues". It has no connection with the word green itself nor Lowland Scots the words "gang green".

Gangrene has been around since humans came into existence, so it has no 'discovery'. The first reported cases were from the Civil War in the United States.
