I believe that Bilbo was first referred to as a burglar in chapter one of The Hobbit, when Bilbo has just shrieked in fright at the things that the dwarves were saying. While Bilbo was recovering from shock in the drawing room, Gloin states, "As soon as I clapped eyes on the little fellow bobbing and puffing on the mat, I had my doubts. He looks more like a grocer than a burglar!"
Bilbo IS a Hobbit. Etymologically, a Hobbit is literally a "hole dweller" while Bilbo means "a short sword".
While Bilbo was sitting and thinking, a thrush flew up with a snail. It was knocking the snail against a rock, and it prodded Bilbo to remember the riddle from the map.
After Bilbo kills the giant Spiders he names his sword Sting. He did not imagine himself capable of being heroic, and until that moment had felt like a very small Hobbit in a very big, dangerous world. He was much more confident from that point on in the adventure.
in short, yes. he is a very hesitant hobbit, but with an irrepressible spirit for adventure.
the trolls capture all the dwarves but not Bilbo b/c he his smaller so he hides then the trolls argue about what to do w/ the dwarves and how to eat them then gandalf (who had left them a while ago) comes back and imitates the troll to keep them arguing until morning and they get turned to stone
Bilbo's escape plan is mediocre. He risked the lives of the dwarves while trying to carry it out.
Bilbo had found a key on the ground, and gave it to Gandalf and the dwarves after they had pushed and cursed for a while.
I think he rescues them numerous times, but the one that first comes to my mind is when he rescues them from the Trolls, by keeping them arguing until the sun rose up and turned them all to stone.

1. Bilbo is alone with Gollum while exchanging riddles (Gollum wants to eat him) 2. Bilbo is alone with Smaug trying to think of clever riddle names 3. Bilbo is alone with the spiders fighting them by himself
They argued for so long because Gandalf the wizard was secretly saying things while in the shadows and one troll would think it was another troll insulting him, so they kept arguing until dawn.

Trolls are a common theme in Scandinavian folklore, known for their large size, strength, and often mischievous behavior. While there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of trolls, they continue to be a prominent part of Scandinavian culture and storytelling.

He had borrowed several handkerchiefs from Elrond. He had complained of having left home without any of them. Bilbo left him 'such small gifts as he would accept' when they stopped on the return trip.
