∙ 14y agoI don't believe that it says anywhere in Ethan Frome that Ethan has to marry Zeena. He married her because he saw her as a strong, sensible woman. She had been caring for his mother, and when his mother died, he would have been alone after Zeena left. He couldn't ask her to stay without asking for her hand in marriage. Therefore, that is why Ethan married Zeena.
