Paper money is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. There are 2 facilities: Washington DC, and Fort Worth. Fort Worth bills have a small "FW" near one of the plate numbers.

Coins are made at 4 mints:

  • Philadelphia: Circulating coins since 1793. P mint mark on all coins since 1980 except pennies. No mint mark on pennies and most other coins 1979 and earlier.
  • Denver: Circulating coins since 1906. D mint mark on all coins.
  • San Francisco: Circulating coins up to 1954; some occasionally up to 1974; proof coins since 1968. S mint mark on all coins.
  • West Point: commemorative and bullion coins only, since the early 1980s. W mint mark on all coins.
In the past there were also mints in New Orleans, Charlotte, Carson City, and Dahlonega GA.
