Though a number of folks looked for Titanic as technology made searching for the wreck possible, it wasn't until Jean-Louis Michel, of the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (translation) and Dr. Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, located the wreck in some 2½ miles of water on Septemeber 1st, 1985 that the finding became official. There was a television documentary made about the discovery of the wreckage. The remains of the vessel litter the sea floor around a spot a bit more than 370 miles south-east of Mistaken Point, Newfoundland.
