The firewall in a 1989 Ford Mustang is the metal separation panel between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment.
The part that's usually referred to as the firewall is the engine side of that metal wall that separates the two sides.
Different things are attached or put through the firewall, such as the brake master cylinder, the wiring harness wires from inside the car, the heater core. Other stuff that could be attached to the firewall would include the wiper motor, brackets for the clutch and throttle linkage.
Here's a link for some more information on these cars. They're also known as a "fox body" mustang. http://www.onlymustangfords.com/fox-body-mustang.html
Hope this helps.
