Checkpoint Charlie was in the middle of the street on Friedrichstrasse. It was at the intersection of Friedrichstrasse and Zimmerstrasse. When you crossed Zimmerstrasse you were then in East Berlin. The Kreuzberg District of Berlin in the old American Sector. :)

The Checkpoints were used by Allied military forces to pass from West Germany to East Berlin. There were three: Checkpoint Alpha on the Inter-German Border, Checkpoint Bravo on the western edge of Berlin, and Checkpoint Charlie on the border between East and West Berlin.

There were a LOT of entries to the Berlin Wall. The three that mattered to the Allied Forces were the rail checkpoint at Griebnitzsee, Checkpoint Bravo at Drewitz, and Checkpoint Charlie at Friedrichstrasse.
