The Confederate soldiers were given food and were allowed to keep their horses, however, the Southerners had to surrender their rifles. Most Southern soldiers would return to their farms for Spring planting.

Grant allowed the Confederate troops to hand in their weapons and go home without fear of persecution. The only other sizeable Confederate army, under Joseph E. Johnston, surrendered to Sherman about a fortnight later. And apart from a few skirmishes West of the Mississippi, that was end of the Civil War.
