In the Music Industry, A&R (Artists and Repertoire) is the division of a record label company that is responsible for scouting and artist development. It is the link between the recording artist/act and the record label, generally to help with the artistic and commercial development of the label's artists. An A&R person is often required to handle contractual negotiations, find songwriters and record producers for the act, and schedule recording sessions. In the UK, before the rise of the Record Producer, the A&R Manager would oversee recording sessions and assume responsibility for making creative decisions relating to the recording.
In 1994-1995 he moved to Universal Music Group working for the Video promotions department. (UMG) is the largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry. With a 25.5% market share, it is one of the Big Four record labels. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vivendi. He worked with such artists as Live, Meat Loaf and Elton John.

You get loads of money and kittens.
It depends on what you mean by selling out. If you mean not signing to a major record label, then yes. If you mean not going mainstream, yes, but if a lot of people like what you are doing, you can automatically go mainstream without changing. If you are signed to a major record label, the label can force you to change your style.
Independent (or Indie )labels have less capital to work with than major record labels - usually affecting production quality of albums and the distribution of. Independent labels are usually a stepping stone for an artist before going with a more mainstream label and making the big bucks, especially if it is a more underground type of music.
