The war in the Pacific began December 7-8, 1941, with Japanese attacks on American and British holdings in southeast Asia and the Pacific, perhaps the most familiar of which was the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The so-called Japanese Expansion was likely spurred on by embargos placed on Japan by Australia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States, which limited its ability to continue its occupation of China. Japan treated the ABCD Line (American-British-Chinese-Dutch) as an act of aggression, and planned the expansion in response.
