Wayne Gretzky lit the main torch outside by the harbor front.
The torch inside was supposed to be lit by 4 different Canadian athletes. However during the opening ceremonies there was a glitch the the cauldron and only 3 of the 4 arms were erected. Rick Hansen arrived into BC place with the torch he then passed it of to the first of the 4 cauldron lighters. It was scheduled to be lit simultaneously by Catrina La May Doan, Steve Nash, Nancy Green and Wayne Gretzky. Unfortunately Catrina La May Doan's side was the one that did not go up as planned. She did however relight the torch in the closing ceremonies which saw the creator and director of the show fix their previous mistake and poke fun at the problem that occurred 2 weeks earlier in the opening ceremonies.
