Why does Puerto Rico have on Olympic team when they are part of the United States?

Puerto Rico has a team because it is a political entity which has its own National Olympic Committee. Even though it is not an independent country, and for most purposes it is equivalent to the 50 states and the District of Columbia, it is distinct enough politically and culturally to be able to have its own Olympic team. Guam, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands.

The two main reasons why those four territories have their own Olympic committees are firstly, because the locals were able to raise the money and develop the infrastructure to have a team and secondly, because the USA's Olympic committee had no objection to this.

Usually, a nation-state has only one Olympic team, but there are other exceptions. Israel & Palestine have separate teams. So do the People's Republic of China, Taiwan ("Chinese Taipei") and Hong Kong. France has several Overseas Departments which have their own teams.

An average golf course would be how many miles?

The average golf course in the United States is approximately 7,200 yards, give or take a 100 depending on the handicap.

---------------

You forgot to take into account the distance between holes which can add as much as 2000-3000 yards depending on the course. As someone who has played golf for 30 years (most of it walking) I would say the average distance to walk a course from the 1st tee to the 18th green is 6-7 miles.

How many pars in a 18 hole golf course?

Each hole and every course has its own predetermined par. Par is the standard number of strokes set for each hole or for the entire course. there are 4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's

There are always 18 pars on an 18 hole golf course. Par is considered to be the score an expert should require to finish a particular hole. now, perhaps the above (4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's) is true on a "standard" or regulation (par 72) course. But there are also courses that are par 69, 70, 71, 73 and so on. These will obviously not follow the standard breakdown. Then also consider "executive" courses, consisting of only par 3's and par 4's. These are often par 58 but again, these can vary as well.

Apolo Ohno

What does Apolo Ohno attribute his success to - regarding his spectacular wins in the 2010 Winter Olympics?

His lifelong conflict and friendship with his father, who pushed Apolo to greatness from a very early age. The most notable incident is Apolo's first Olympic trial, where despite being a heavy favorite, the 15-year-old finished dead last. Afterwards, his father, who saw that Apolo simply gave up, brought him to a remote cabin on a Washington beach and left him there alone to figure out where he wanted to go in life. After 8 days, Apolo called his father and told him, "I want to skate." So he skated, devoting his entire life to the sport, and now he is a world champion-- thanks in large part to his father, Yuki.

Should a city spend money for the Olympics?

I personally think that spending money on the Olympics is more of a responsibility, whether it brings good or harm, rather than a choice. Olympics is a global event and unless everyone participate, no one will enjoy. And it is not as if the Olympics only has negative sides as suggested by some when Vancouver designated a shabby apartment just to get rid of the homeless temporarily. It does bring a great economic boom and raises the provincial and national standard which also brings more economic boom as well as other cultural influences such as Canadian identity.
