Who is Murphy in Murphy's Law?
The Real Murphy Major Edward A. Murphy, Jr. (1918 - 1990) was an American aerospace engineer who worked on safety-critical systems and is best-known for Murphy's Law which states that "If there's more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way". This is not to be confused with Finagle's law. Born in Panama in 1918, Murphy was the eldest of five children. After attending high school in New Jersey, he went to the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1940. The same year he accepted a commission into the United States Army, and undertook pilot training with the United States Army Air Corps in 1941. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theatre in India, China and Burma (now known as Myanmar), achieving the rank of Major. Following the end of hostilities, in 1947 Murphy attended the United States Air Force Institute of Technology, becoming R&D Officer at the Wright Air Development Center of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. It was while here that he became involved in the high-speed rocket sled experiments (USAF project MX981, 1949) which led to the coining of Murphy's Law . Murphy himself was reportedly unhappy with the commonplace interpretation of his law, which is seen as capturing the essential "cussedness" of inanimate objects. Murphy regarded the law as crystallising a key principle of defensive design, in which one should always assume worst-case scenarios. Murphy was said by his son to have regarded the many jocular versions of the law as "ridiculous, trivial and erroneous", his unsuccessful attempts to have the law taken more seriously thus making him a victim of his own law. In 1952, having resigned from the United States Air Force, Murphy carried out a series of rocket acceleration tests at Holloman Air Force Base, then returned to California to pursue a career in aircraft cockpit design for a series of private contractors. He worked on pilot escape systems for some of the most famous experimental aircraft of the 20th century, including the F-4 Phantom, the XB-70 Valkyrie, the SR-71 Blackbird, the B-1 Lancer, and the X-15 rocket plane. During the 1960s, he worked on safety and life support systems for Project Apollo, and ended his career with work on pilot safety and computerized operation systems on the Apache helicopter. He died in 1990. Murphy's law has taken on many different formulations. In 1952, the proverb was phrased "Anything That Can Possibly Go Wrong, Does" in the epigraph of John Sack's The Butcher: The Ascent of Yerupaja. Possibly the earliest printed use of Murphy's name in connection with the law is in Lloyd Mallan's 1955 book, Men, Rockets and Space Rats: "Colonel Stapp's favorite takeoff on sober scientific laws, Murphy's Law, Stapp calls it 'Everything that can possibly go wrong will go wrong'." Or with a slight addition "Anything that can go wrong, will, and at the worst possible moment".

Nothing is as easy as it looks.\nEverything takes longer than you think.\nAnything that can go wrong will go wrong.\nIf there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. Corollary: If there is a worse time for something to go w…rong, it will happen then.\nIf anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.\nIf you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.\nLeft to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.\nIf everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.\nNature always sides with the hidden flaw.\nMother nature is a bitch.\nIt is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.\nWhenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first.\nEvery solution breeds new problems.after aerospace engineer Edward Murphy. Murphy's law of GUI design: - Law of Maximised Misunderstanding: It states that, "If something can possibly be misunderstood, it will be." - Corollary: If it cannot possibly be misunderstood, it will still be misunderstood. - User Identification Theorem: Everyone involved with software development a…ccept the fact that GUIs should be best design to suit the users. Users can be developers , clients or actual end users. Hence , the software should be designed in such way that all the requirements are satisfied. No, it is not. Murphy's Law states that if something can go wrong, it will. (There are variants and corollaries.) And if by the fourth dimension connection in quantum physics you mean the dimension of time in spacetime, things happen there according to probability and statistics, or get caught up in… uncertainty, à la Schrödinger.. The consequences of these things (the quantum mechanical one) with regard to Murphy include the idea that sometimes something must happen, and at other times it can or might happen. And if the latter is true, it might happen or might not happen. Murphy says if it is possible (for something to go wrong), it will happen. Additionally, in the world of quantum mechanics there is a question of when things will happen, and time is relative. Time is not relative to Murphy except in the version of Murphy's law which says that if something can go wrong, it will go wrong, and at the worst possible time and having the worst consequences. That's pretty specific and not something that is timed with a clock. You can't get that kind of specificity in quantum mechanics because of relativity, if for no other reason. (MORE)

Actually Murphy's law has been suggested (humorously) as "the fourth law of thermodynamics". It is only peripherally related the the second law. One of the implications of the second law is that an increase in disorder in the universe is a consequence of natural processes. Some have suggested tha…t Murphy's law (If any thing can go wrong, it will.) is an example of this. Strictly speaking - this is quite different from the 2nd law but when someone screws up, it sure does tend to cause a lot of disorder! (MORE)
