Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the fertility of nature and women. Hades, the lord of the dead, saw Persephone picking flowers one day in a field and abucted her. He wanted to make her his goddess, so he fed her 4 pomegrante seeds. It's said that you stay in the underworld for one month for every seed you eat. While Persephone was in the underworld for those 4 months, her mother Demeter became depressed and forgot to take care of nature, so all the plants would die and women could not get pregnant (those four months being winter).
Persephone was usually depicted as a young goddess holding sheafs of grain and a flaming torch. Sometimes she was shown in the company of her mother Demeter, and the hero Triptolemos, the teacher of agriculture. At other times she appears enthroned beside Hades.
