Sonic would definitely win in a fight, but as to who is "better" is a matter of opinion. I prefer Sonic.

It's all a matter of opinion really. Personally I think Sonic is the better character. The Sonic series has sold over 75 million copies worldwide, so the majority of that number would tell you Sonic is better.

The Mario series has sold over 200 million copies worldwide. If a worldwide poll was taken, chances are that there would be more people that at least know Mario. Sonic is not as well-known.
