Macky Sall is a geological engineer by profession, previously holding the position of National Security of Mines and Industry, before taking other offices including the post of Prime Minister of Senegal from 2004 April 21 to 2007 June 19. After Wade was re-elected in 2007, Sall was made the President of the National Assembly on 2007 June 20. However, political differences forced Sall to resign on 2008 November 9, at which point he formed his own party. He ran for president in 2012, placing second in the first round, but obtaining most of the other opposition votes, he won the run-off election.
