Mao Zedong was a genius, in charismatic skills, political/government control skills and being one of the most influential people in the world. The only effect if US did intervened would be war. The Cold War, happened recently after WWII. The US couldn't risk a war after being healed from a great war. The Koreans affair, was different. In that scenario, there's at least a fighting chance, in China, everyone already believed in communism. There's at least the South Koreans to fight against the Communism North Korea.
