Albus Dumbledore sent Rubeus Hagrid to collect Harry and bring him to the Dursley's house. Hagrid got Harry out before too many people swarmed the house. He then borrowed Sirius Black's flying motorbike to take Harry to Privet Drive.

Yes in the seventh book Harry tries to retrieve the sword of Gryffindor from the bottom of the frozen lake but the horcrux pulls him sideways and he passes out. Ron pulls him out of the lake.
