Steinbeck wrote about real people. Mostly, he avoided archetypes because there are so few of them in real life. His characters are typically flawed in some way and and dualistic characteristics, such immorality and morality. Many of his characters have good intentions but wind up doing bad things because human beings do not tend to be wholly good or wholly evil.
One exception to this rule, however, is Cathy from East of Eden. She is not meant to be realistic. She is the incarnation of evil.
