Luke's Gospel says that John the Baptist and Jesus were second cousins, so in a culture where family ties were so important, would certainly have known of the relationship and probably knew each other.

On the other hand, John's Gospel (1:31) says that they were strangers, "And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water." Again (1:33), "And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost."
