The popularity was a long time in the making for Ball, an established motion-picture actress who found her niche on television playing a wisecracking housewife whose schemes to avoid domestic duties resulted in hilarious misadventures. The program showcased Ball's expertise for timing, physical comedy, and range of characterization. Lucille Désirée Ball was born on Aug. 6, 1911, in Celoron, near Jamestown, N.Y. Determined to become an actress, Ball left high school at age 15 to enroll in a drama school in New York City, where she was told she lacked talent. There were rumors that Lucille Ball was a communist but she was not active at all. It was her grandfather who made her register as a communist. There was a big thing about it and Lucy did testify to the fact she did register but in no was was ever active. Also, she most likely changed her political status later in life.
