He was the second Prime Minister of the British Commonwealth of Mauritius from 1982 June 30 until Mauritius became a republic nearly 10 years later. He continued as Prime Minister of the republic until 2003 September 30, when he resigned to take the position of president. Jugnauth officially assumed the title of President of Mauritius on 2003 October 7, and continues in this position today.
