Francois Champollion decoded the Rosetta Stone in 1822, 23 years after its discovery by French soldiers. Champollion could read both Greek and Coptic, and was able to use that knowledge to trace the meanings of symbols back to the hieroglyphs on the stone.
English Physicist Thomas young suggested that the symbols in cartouches spelled the name Ptomely in 1802, then French linguist Jean-Francois Champollion worked with that to translate the stone which he completed in 1822
It was (re-)discovered in 1799 by a French soldier on expedition to Egypt. It had been recycled as building material for the construction of Fort Julien near Rashid (a/k/a Rosetta), Egypt.
