John Masefield served as poet laureate from 1930 until his death in 1967. Masefield was initially selected as a 'safe' candidate (Kipling and Yeats - the two obvious choices in 1930 - both had political beliefs which would have been uncomfortable for the English establishment) and went on to become one of the most loved and longest-serving incumbents of the post.
Since even Masefield never thought of himself as a major poet, his success as laureate perhaps says something important about the nature of the role.
