The US won because the supreme court declared it unconstitutional for a person to carry unregistered shotgun throughout states. There was also no evidence found that those weapons were related to the military or served as a protection for the person. Therefore, the second amendment would not apply to it.
However, on the local district court, Miller was able to defend himself well enough for the people to rule in his favor by saying how the second amendment permitted him keeping arms.
