This comes from a verse in Isaiah, when as a very young man he was willing to be sent to do God's Will:-

Isa 6:6-9 KJV Then flew one of the seraphims unto me [ie Isaiah], having a live coal in his hand, which he [ie a seraphim] had taken with the tongs from off the altar: (v.7) And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, "Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged". (v.8) Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then said I, "Here am I; send me". (v.9) And He said, "Go, and tell this people, "Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not". "

This same prophecy is referred to by Jesus Christ about both the Jews of that day and all peoples of any age: [Note: it reads differently because Christ was quoting from the Septuagint translation]:-

Mat 13:14-16 KJV And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of[Isaiah], which saith, "By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: (v.15) For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. (v.16) But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear."

The people who go can be children, young men, or new adult converts, but their age is immaterial:

1Sa 3:8-10 KJV And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here am I; for thou didst call me". And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. (v.9) Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, "Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, "Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth". " So Samuel went and lay down in his place. (v.10) And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, "Samuel, Samuel". Then Samuel answered, "Speak; for thy servant heareth".

Act 9:6, 20-22 KJV And he [ie Paul] trembling and astonished said, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" And the Lord said unto him, "Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do"...(v.20) And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. (v.21) But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? (v.22) But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

What is important is their zeal and determination, and this applies to all christians, not just missionaries.
