Firstly, among non-Christians in Japan, Christmas is not really celebrated at all. The western-style Christmas traditions are increasingly taking hold here, but basically all people do on the 24th is eat 'Christmas cake' (a sponge cake with white cream covering, topped by strawberries). It is also an occaision for couples to go out on a special date. I think the reason it is the 24th, and not the 25th, is the influence of the traditional New Year celebrations, which focus on the day before the year changes over.
Christians in Japan celebrate Christmas in much the same manner as it is celebrated in the west, and non-Christian Japanese do not practice Christmas.
