Aglets seem pointless but they do have a point which is to stop the laces fraying. Aglets were made back in Roman times so you can't really say who invented them. But back in Roman times they weren't made from plastic. Aglets were made from glass,metal,stone or whatever else could be shaped as necessary. Aglets used to be used in place buttons at the end of ribbons, to help fasten clothes closed. It used to be spelled aiglet. Rich people would have aglets made of precious metals like brass or silver.
There are literally millions of shoelace aglets that are manufactured every year. This is because most shoes will have at least 6 aglets per shoe.
